A rural radio personality has acted as a go-between to end a police siege in central-west New South Wales which left one man dead.MICHAEL GEORGE PESTANO, from the inner-Sydney suburb of Pyrmont, died and two other men were injured, one critically, during a dispute at a property at Arthurville, west of Wellington, just before midnight (AEST) on Friday.Three men and a woman have been arrested over the incident. Following the shooting, the alleged gunman rang local radio personality LEO DE KROO. Mr DE KROO has told Network Ten he received a call around 1.30am from a man who said he'd shot and killed someone. The radio host then got police approval to act as a go-between, finding out how many people were inside and the location of the guns. 26July2004

New Minister in boots and all first week!
New communications minister Helen Coonan has wasted no time in letting it be known she is going to have an opinion on issues relating to her portfolio. Amongst her agenda she has had plenty to say on The Telstra sale, cross media ownership and yesterday said she will review laws protecting major sporting events for free-to-air networks after fielding complaints from a golf-loving cabinet colleague about the Nine network's treatment of this week's British Open. At this rate we will expect Minister Coonan to be vocal on all issues relating to radio, more so the unfolding digital radio issues as they arise. 21July

Hinch V Price not resolved!
When David Hookes passed away on the 19th of January
3AW's Derryn Hinch was quick off the mark to point out to listeners that
all was not as it seemed in the Hookes marital home. This angered fellow
staffers, some a little more than others. Sister station 2UE's
Steve Price was so angry he made the allegation Hinch was regularly
drunk on air. What has followed is the threat of the whole drama ending
up in the courts if resolution can't be reached. Ironically Price is
always quick off the mark to engage the lawyers in cases like this.
Sources believe although Derryn stepped on a few to many toes at the
time of Hookes tragic death he has been rebuilt many of the bridges that
were burnt by his untimely comments. Southern Cross management are
hoping this issue can be resolved avoiding the courts. More on this feud

AUSTRALIAN media lost three of its greatest

John Brennan prepares the 2GB welcome mate for Zemaniac
More news reaches Crikey on the imminent poaching of Stan Zemanek by 2GB program director John Brennan. In addition to Zemaniac's wife and 2UE producer moving across in various capacities in recent weeks, now we hear that Stan's former producer from 3AW days has been hired to produce Philip Clark, whose 2GB ratings are disappointing to say the least.Clark is on air from 3-7pm each day and his latest rating performance of just 5.8 per cent left 2GB eighth in the Sydney market during Drive. Fellow short, low-rating jock Steve Price even beats him with 7 per cent on 2UE.When you consider that The Parrot delivers the number one Breakfast rating of 13.3 per cent for 2GB it really is down, down, down throughout the day but it doesn't get any lower than Phil Clark. After all, there is a huge recovery to 12.7 per cent with Murray Wilton and Brian Wiltshire after Clark finishes his low-rating shift. Crikey hereby predicts that Clark is soon to be sacked but we can't for the life of us work out why they would want to replace him with the Zemaniac. Then again, Singo, Sam Chisholm, The Parrot, Ray Hadley and the Zemaniac are all typically Sydney aggressive types so maybe he fits the station profile better than the more cerebral former ABC broadcaster Phil Clark 31May (Source Crikey)

Ratings Highs and Lows!
No doubt you could of heard a pin drop at 2UE when they received their ratings results today. The once all powerful Sydney talk machine has taken more knocks this survey with falls in every shift. John Laws (7.3) is now 4.2 points behind 2GB's Ray Hadley (11.5). The Cage (7.4) rose 1.6 on 2MMM and realistically it needs to rise again next survey to see a birth in 2005. 2DAY FM dropped across the day whilst NOVA although dipping across the day they came up trumps winning the survey making it 3 in a row. Melbourne and SEN is on the march with a one point rise in breakfast (4.2) with the station hitting 3.0 points overall. All indications said SEN would drop away on weekends with the start of the AFL season but they have retained their ground with a slight increase of 0.1. 3AW is the leader in Melbourne (14.4) holding strong in most segments. Nova100 climbed a little this survey with an increase across the day of just under 1 point although FOX FM (14.4) is the clear winner on the FM band.

SPIKE OVER SPAT
It will be interesting to see what impact the highly publicised Laws/Jones/Flint affair will have on tomorrow's radio ratings. When ABC-TV's Media Watch broke the story a fortnight ago there was one week left of the 10-week survey period. FM radio executives believe the huge media coverage may have given the two AM stations a last-minute audience spike. Jones's breakfast shift at 2GB is still in front with a 13.5 per cent audience share, but Nova's Merrick and Rosso and 702's Angela Catterns are fewer than two percentage points behind. Laws, in particular, could do with a ratings boost in his morning slot at 2UE. He is tying with 702's Sally Loane in fourth place, well behind Nova's Bianca Dye, 2GB's Ray Hadley and 2Day's Adam Willis. 10May2004

"The whole towns talking about the Jones boy"
A leaked draft report which found a radio network breached broadcasting codes had been flawed, the head of the broadcasting watchdog said today.Earlier this month, the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) dismissed a complaint that the Macquarie Radio Network had failed to properly disclose Telstra's sponsorship of the Alan Jones radio program.
ABC Television's Media Watch program last night revealed an earlier draft report found the radio network breached broadcasting standards.ABA chairman David Flint said the draft report had been prepared by a young ABA lawyer and had not contained enough evidence to substantiate its conclusions."What we've done is we've looked very carefully at all of the evidence, presented all of the relevant evidence to the board and the board has come down with its conclusions," Prof Flint told ABC radio.

An international Christian radio station based in Western Australia's Kimberley region has ambitions to broadcast to more than half the people in the world. The group, Heralding Christ Jesus' Blessings, has applied for approval to build 31 radio towers on land outside Kununurra, in the state's north-west.The station says the expansion would allow it to build on its current overseas audience with a potential market of 60 per cent of the world's population. Its original application more than two years ago met with considerable local opposition. But manager Mike Moore is confident that has changed. "The facility we've done I believe we've done well," he said."The few stirrers that were around the last time... they were actually saying that [what] we were doing wasn't really quite right. It's certainly not obtrusive and certainly hasn't caused an environmental problems."14April2004

[It has] always done a good job and we need to keep that up for the future."Mr Latham has pledged if Labor wins government the ABC will be more independent. He has also told the ABC's Lateline program the national broadcaster has been run down financially and he has indicated he will boost funding to the ABC.Mr Latham's ruled out introducing advertising on the broadcaster.09April2004

Axed projects include Triple J's only Arts program, Artery, ABC Online's The Space and the digital channel Fly TV."Our eight cents a day used to provide access to all Australians, whether they lived in Sydney or far North Queensland, to the rich cultural life of Australia," the CPSU's ABC secretary Graeme Thomson said."ABC Management has walked away from this responsibility."

SURVEY 2 RESULTS
Survey 2 has been delivered and in Sydney Nova came up trumps again (12.0) in what looks like a rather stagnant Sydney survey with the two biggest falls delivered by2GB's Alan Jones breakfast program down 1.8 to 13.5 and mirrored by WS FM afternoons also falling 1.8. In second place 2DAY FM rising 0.3 to 10.7 followed by 2GB overall down by 0.4 to 9.9. 2MMM breakfast climbed 0.8 to 6.9 and would still need to go higher to see the year out. The Melbourne results shows newcomer SEN continuing to rise up 0.5 to 2.6. Winners and grinners in Melbourne this survey are 3AW 14.2, FOX 12.2 and the ABC 10.9. Nova100 continues to worry, down 0.1 to 8.3.The big fall in the Melbourne market is the 4.9 drop suffered by Gold FM in the all important 25-39 age group. Although GOLD remains strong in the 40-54 age group with a healthy 20.1 % share it has gone from 2nd TO 4th with 10.5 down 1.0. Brisbane shows B105 still way out in front with a staggering 19.9 up 1.5 followed by 4MMM with 13.1 giving Austereo 33% of the Brisbane market which makes the forthcoming FM auction even more interesting. SAFM another freak of nature up 0.6 to claim the crown in Adelaide with 21.0 but the climb continues by MIX 102.3 now commanding 17.1% up 0.5. Interesting to see Fiveaa up 1.2 to a 15.3 market share 'makin' it a sweet victory (pun intended). 30March2004

The Australian Broadcasting Authority is proposing to make FM channel capacity available for the Lismore commercial AM radio service, 2LM in Kyogle, NSW.The ABA’s proposal follows consideration of a request from the licensee of 2LM, Richmond River Broadcasters Pty Ltd, to enable it to resolve reception deficiencies in the region,’ said Professor David Flint, ABA Chairman. The additional FM channel capacity has been planned by the ABA under the Commercial Radio Blackspots Program. This program is an Australian Government initiative which will provide $5 million over three years to deliver new or improved commercial radio services to regional and remote communities where it has not been commercially viable for licensees to provide coverage. The program will ensure that greater access to commercial radio services is provided to a large number of people located in regional and remote Australia. In addition the ABA is proposing to make FM channel capacity available to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Lismore for a future national radio service.‘This is part of the ABA’s ongoing commitment to reserve channel capacity for the possible future provision of the full range of ABC radio services to communities or regional transmission areas with a population of 10 000 people or more,’ said Professor Flint.

We are seeking some (legal) opinions. When your figure comes back 0.6, the alarm bells go off.”

APN News and Media (ARN) have announced a record net profit for the 12 months to the end of December 2003 of a massive $103.5 million, showing a 20% increase on the previous year. The bonus of profit being up displayed the ledger with a 13% increase in revenue up to $213 million.
Company debt still sits at over $825 million with a program in place to slice this dramatically.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority has decided to commence a formal investigation into whether certain commercial arrangements between Mr Leon Byner, a radio presenter with Five AA in Adelaide, and a number of third parties should have been disclosed under the Broadcasting Services (Commercial Radio Current Affairs Disclosure) Standard 2000.On 23 January 2004, the Advertiser newspaper in Adelaide published allegations about Mr Byner and his proposal to enter into third party arrangements with the Adelaide Lord Mayor and the Adelaide City Council. The ABA made preliminary inquiries of Five AA, seeking more information. Five AA suspended Mr Byner from duty and initiated its own investigation. Following this investigation, Five AA provided a significant amount of material to the ABA. “While Five AA has been co-operative in providing information to the ABA in relation to Mr Byner's arrangements, the material raises unresolved questions as to whether those arrangements fall within the regulatory regime of the Disclosure Standard,” said Ms Lyn Maddock, Acting Chair of the ABA. “A formal investigation will enable the ABA to consider all relevant material and reach a concluded view on whether any of these arrangements should have been disclosed as required by the Disclosure Standard.” The ABA will develop terms of reference for the investigation and will seek further information from Five AA and Mr Byner before finalising a report. 19FEB2004

"We want the big names and we get them, but only when it is a relevant story. "I mean we virtually didn't touch footy until last week when we had new AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson on to explain the new Wizard Cup rules, because footy was not relevant until then." Radio advertising up 19% in January
Metropolitan advertising revenue for Australian commercial radio was up by 19 per cent in January to $36 million, according to figures .PricewaterhouseCoopers Radio Revenue figures showed advertising revenue was up from $30 million in January last year. Commercial Radio Australia chief executive Joan Warner said the numbers showed a strong start to the year for commercial radio nationwide. "These figures augur well for a stronger year for commercial radio and follow a solid performance in 2003 where revenue for the full calendar year increased by about six per cent to around $485 million," Ms Warner said. She said all states had experienced an increase in revenue for the month with 34 per cent growth recorded in Brisbane, 25 per cent in Melbourne and 16 per cent in Sydney compared to the previous year. This growth also compares well with many international markets which recorded flatter growth in radio revenue last year and are expecting 2004 to remain weak," Ms Warner said. Analysts have predicted growth of less than four per cent in international markets this year. Ms Warner said 2004 looked set to be a very exciting year for radio Australia-wide with radio stations throughout the nation optimistic about growth prospects for the year. "I believe radio's reliability and cost-effectiveness will again prove its strongest assets in terms of attracting the advertising dollar in 2004," she said. Ms Warner said all eyes in the radio industry would be focused on the results of the first radio ratings survey of the year, due to be released next week.17FEB2004

Graham Kennedy: Part 1 Nicky spots a star!
Can you imagine over 53 years ago when radio announcers modelled themselves on their BBC counterparts, sounding all very formal and dressing much the same way. Cast your mind back to your mothers or grandmothers kitchen, all very primitive now with its early Kooka and speckled 'modern' laminex table with matching chairs. Mum's in the kitchen peeling spuds for that nights tea and up on the mantle piece the bakerlite Astor is tuned into 3UZ.. The program is naturally Nicky Nicholls and his cheeky young panel operator Graham Kennedy. Nicky had long been a form of release with his over the 'fence style' all very Melbourne and all very addictive, with Nicky commanding over 70% of the listening audience, something we will never see again.
The cheeky young panel operator had arrived at 3UZ after a brief period as a messenger for Radio Australia joining 3UZ as an assistant in the Music library. Graham was soon learning more than just the panel all quite by accident the story goes yet fate sometimes plays a strange hand. It was during the first week the veteran Nicky noticed a quality in the young bloke that was waiting to be harnessed. What followed was a magical on air relationship, not a partnership because clearly Nicky steered this ship and it was here where Graham Kennedy the entertainer was born. Nicky encouraged Graham to push the boundary often astonished just how far he would go 14 FEB 2004
DMG: BIG SPEND IN UK COULD SELL NETWORK
Paul Thompson has been a man on a mission for the last few years, the mission to build a radio network like no other across Australia. So far they have made their competitors sit up and take notice. Austereo have turned their Adelaide SAFM and MMM inside out in anticipation of the arrival of Nova ! Thompson has so far bought 5 FM licences and not spared a cent in doing so. Their will be 3 more capital city auctions this year and he wants them to, Sydney and Brisbane in April, Melbourne possibly September. The facts are he does want them, DMG's parent company wants something as well, and boy is that dear. Data Mail & General Trust, DMGT are chasing a big fish, a colossus weighing in at $1.2 Billion in the form of the UK's most conservative newspaper Hollinger Inc Daily Telegraph. Paul Thompson has dismissed DMGT's big want as having no impact on their Australian ambitions but this is far from the truth. If crunch comes to crunch and DMGT hook their colossus, then the dollars are needed to land the deal expect a swift sale and a changed face of FM radio in late 2004 EARLY 2005. 10 FEB 2004
SEN OVERNIGHT: A FATAL MISTAKE
SEN's union with TalkSport overnight lacks one vital ingredient, the ability to connect to Melbourne listeners. As much as Melbourne loves her sport I can't see how a live feed of an UK focused Sports station is going to have any impact on the potential after midnight audience. Not to sell the UK station short by any degree, it is a leader in its field but SEN is here to become a leader and there is no way Talk Sport can develop a relationship with Melbourne listeners! I think SEN programmers need to have a re-think on how they format overnight and realize the error of their ways. SEN will be local overnight on weekends providing international sport results and taking talkback.06 FEB 2004
